Who are you?

My name is Nico, and I am a photographer. I would like to think of my work as an intimate secret that I'm sharing with the world.

My photography tends to be on the simplistic side; I stray from using fancy gadgets, heavy amounts of Photoshop, makeup artists, and an overall crew because 1.) I have this "do it yourself"/"less is more" attitude that my grandfather drilled into my head since I was a child, 2.) It's my art, and art is subjective, I can do whatever the heck I want with it, and 3.) I like to be one-on-one with my subjects, it's an intimate process that I don't like to glamorize or make overly "done up" with things that I don't feel are necessary in order to create.

What are you inspired by?

I am heavily influenced by Renaissance paintings, there is something so otherworldly and fragile about the women in those portraits that I love to imitate. I also like the lessons that come from folklore, it's played a huge role in assisting me with conceptualizing my images. Guillermo del Toro, Juergen Teller, Paolo Roversi, Francesca Woodman, Deborah Turbeville, Sally Mann, Sylvia Plath, The Smiths, and this wonderful Icelandic band called 'Múm', have all been artists that I am influenced by greatly. My biggest source of inspiration would have to be the feelings brought on by intimate moments in my life, particularly the feelings that I experience when going through a breakup or when I become infatuated with a romantic interest.

What was the last movie you watched?

"The Forrest"...I think? Maybe? Struggling to remember here....Sorry, I've been completely addicted to/binge watching the series "Vikings" (Floki makes my heart soar) and "Game of Thrones", everything else before that is a bit of a blur.

What was the last book you read?

"The Time Traveler's Wife".

Do you have any role model?

My grandmother and grandfather, they're both immigrants who worked very hard to establish themselves, in foreign territory, during rather tough times.

What is your next creative project?

I have quite a few projects lined up, I just have a horrible way of explaining them, especially when it comes to the models I work with. Fortunately for me, they have learned to adjust to my eccentricity. I'm pretty sure that one model in particular has it in their mind that I could possibly be a serial killer though, I tossed an idea his way about putting a bird nest on his chest in the middle of a forest, and still have yet to hear back from him. Oh the joys of being awkward~

What do you like about Portfoliobox?

I love how user-friendly it is. I have flat out given up on other hosts and always gone with Portfoliobox because of its beautiful simplicity.
