Norfbound Beats Artist

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, my name is Norf, short for Norfbound Beats! I’m a multidisciplinary artist based in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia that is heavily involved in sounds and visuals. What started off as fooling around in GarageBand on my old 2011 MacBook Pro has now turned into this obsession with creating otherworldly sounds through virtual instruments. The visuals came in naturally when I launched my YouTube channel to upload the beats that I was making in order to separate myself from the rest and the interest in creating digital artwork spiked!

Tell us about one of your favourite projects and what inspired you to do it

In terms of design, one of my favourite projects to date has to be the “norfboundbeats.com” artwork that I created. It was my first few projects I did on Blender so it took me a lot longer than it should’ve mainly due to fact that I was learning my ropes around a new software at the same time. In terms of music, I have a lot favourite projects but most of them have came from collaborations with my fellow producer peers! The outcome is always outstanding and every piece that comes from it instantly becomes my favourite beat!

What are you working on at the moment?

Since I have been extremely busy with artwork, designing and also my day job as a professional graphic designer, I’m going to lean back a little bit from that and continue making beats! Consistency in music is what I have been lacking hence I’d love to just improve on that.

Who are your biggest influencers in the industry?

If we’re speaking in terms of music, my number one source of inspiration mainly comes from Travis Scott. My whole catalogue of beats revolves around his sound. But it’s not just Travis Scott himself, his producers are of course the people curating his sound in the first place. Wondagurl, Mike Dean, Allen Ritter are the main names here. The people who directly influence my sounds are my peers, the often collaborations are what has evolved my sounds to what it is today. Names like TheSkyBeats, 7ink, Cryptic and TXNSHI just to make a few of them, they have ultimately raised the bar so high up when we’re talking about YouTube Type Beats.

If we’re speaking about design, I have a few mutuals from the design world but I’m not 100% sure who I draw my biggest inspiration from. Here are some names, @sv.meet, @ozbren.studio, @fxntxnile just to name a few.

What was the last thing that inspired you?

I can’t really say anything specific but every time I open up my Instagram, I am inspired daily and at an instant. Be it for music or for designing.

Tell us why it's important for you to have an artist portfolio website

In my humble opinion, having an artist portfolio website portrays a certain level of professionalism in an artists' digital identity. People are more likely to hire you for jobs and it’s just simpler to direct someone to a site instead of an Instagram profile for example.

As a professional artist what are your tips in building an artist portfolio website?

I may not know much behind the science of websites but I do know a thing or two. I personally feel like any artists' website should portray their work in the front page. This way, it saves the hassle for visitors instead of having them clicking around to find what they want to see. Good fonts and typefaces also matter. A good colour selection along with colour coordination also heavily influences how attractive someone's website looks.

How do you market yourself?

My first rule in everything is to work on sharpening your skills, put out great content and be consistent. Consistency is the key rule in all of this! Working with other artists also helps a lot, that’s a whole other audience that you have just been exposed to!
