How to make student digital portfolio

Partager:

Though a digital portfolio requires extra effort, creating one invites more career opportunities throughout your life. By keeping a digital portfolio throughout your career, you’re able to document your full professional story.

What is an e-portfolio for students?

A digital portfolio is a computer-based collection of student performance over time. Portfolios make classroom learning more accessible to parents, administrators, and other district support staff because they provide a window into student learning.

What should student portfolios include?

Portfolios can be a physical collection of student work. They can include written assignments, journal entries, completed tests, artwork, lab reports, physical projects (such as dioramas or models), and other material evidence of learning progress and academic accomplishment, including awards, honors, etc.

How to make a student digital portfolio

  1. Be honest and creative

Just be yourself, and evaluate your opportunities and abilities wisely. Most students think they have to be beyond remarkable to get noticed by colleges. They perceive they need to be good at everything. From my perspective, honesty and self-reflection are vital attributes I looked for in new students, and creativity and problem-solving capacity. Real-life situations and how they got resolved — even difficult stories — are valuable to share, whether in writing or a video or a poem, or a series of photos or images.

  1. Provide proofs

One of the great things about using visuals is that it allows students to showcase their skills truly. In the words of a mentor, “it is not bragging if you have evidence that you’ve done it.”

Using free or inexpensive online tools can help students craft their stories of leadership, community outreach, research experience, or anything other skills they want to showcase applying.

  1. Don't limit yourself with boring templates

Students should not fall into the trap of using templates to build out their resumes. These templates limit their control of being creative and also don’t stand out from other resumes.

Students should blend the six ingredients – education, major, experience and service, skills, and relevant projects-to develop a strong resume. Colleges are no more interested in merely knowing the candidates’ academic side; they want to know their personalities and interests. Even if you have family responsibilities, you might list them in a separate achievement section by proudly representing yourself as a responsible family member.

Additionally, students should choose the theme according to their field. For example, if applying for an area related to designing, then dull white or black resumes will not grab attention in a second. Contrarily, the one with bold colors will give it a field-relevant touch.

  1. Showcase that you are tech-savvy

First, what you should do is highlight your uniqueness and impress anyone who is scrolling your portfolio. You don’t need to put yourself in someone’s barriers, be creative and follow the modern trends, using all the possible digital tools to approve oneself the best you can. Creating a resume website shows that you are tech-savvy and follow new trends. Also, such a website gives you more space to display your portfolio. So whether you have samples of your writing, artwork, videos, or photos, you can easily display them in a designated portfolio section on your website.

There’s also plenty of space to include references and testimonials from your professors or internship mentors — something a standard resume cannot hold. And finally, a resume website is easy to manage and add to it with time.

  1. Keep it laconic and updated

It is essential to regularly renew your student digital portfolio, but keep it brief and informative enough to impress your employer.

We prepared for you three rules, which will simplify your life:

  • Pay attention especially to your pluses when creating a portfolio
  • Keep it short and impressive.
  • Keep updating it, adding anything important periodically, as your portfolio is your business card.

Why should every student use digital portfolios in the classroom?

Why should every student use digital portfolios in the classroom?

  • Objective evaluation of progress. As you can understand, student portfolios help teachers and educators to select an approach to every person individually, determining their level of knowledge and skills. It is essential to realize that everyone is different, and everyone needs more or less time to learn something independently. That is why students’ portfolios act as a perfect tool for objective evaluation, while tests and quizzes give teachers only information about what students know at a particular point in time. At the same time, every student has to understand that portfolios should not just be compilations of a student’s best work. Still, instead, they should include evidence and work products that demonstrate how they improved over time.

  • Portfolios can help to determine strengths and weaknesses. A test can help teachers determine, for example, whether students have learned a specific mathematical skill. But can those students also apply that skill to a complex problem in economics, geography, civics, or history? Can they use it to conduct a statistical analysis of an extensive data set in a spreadsheet? Or can they use it to develop a better plan for a hypothetical business? (Educators may call this ability to apply skills and knowledge to novel problems and different domains “transfer of learning”). Portfolios can also be used to evaluate student work and learning in non-school contexts; for example, suppose a student participated in an internship or completed a project under the guidance of an expert mentor from the community. In that case, students could create portfolios throughout these learning activities and submit them to their teachers or school as evidence they have met certain learning expectations or graduation requirements.

  • Responsibility. As we said before, while passing such a part of life like childhood, it is binding to learn such a crucial feature as responsibility. In some schools, portfolios are a way for students to critique and evaluate their work and academic progress, often deciding what will be included in their portfolios. Because portfolios document learning growth over time, they can help students reflect on where they started a course, how they developed, and where they ended up at the school year’s conclusion. When reviewing a portfolio, teachers may also ask students to articulate the connection between particular work products and the academic expectations and goals for a course. For these reasons, advocates of portfolios often recommend that students be involved in determining what goes into a portfolio and that teachers should not unilaterally make the decisions without involving students.

  • Portfolios let parents be aware of kids’ progress. Student portfolios can also help parents become more informed about their children’s education and learning progress, what is being taught in a particular course, and what students are doing and learning in the classroom. Advocates may also contend that when parents are more informed about and engaged in their child’s education, they can play a more active role in supporting their children at home. This parental support could have a beneficial effect on academic achievement and long-term student outcomes.
