Portfolio of the week
Who are you?
Hello! My name is Laura and I'm originally from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England and only recently I've moved down to Swansea, in Wales. Drawing was always one of my favourite hobbies, at the age of 31 I decided to do something about it go back to university and study for my BA in Illustration and after a lot of hard work I came out with a First Class degree with Honours. I would consider myself a 'jack of all trades' as I love to try out animation, risograph printing, lino cut, traditional letterpress, watercolours, gouache, and pattern design!
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I'm currently working on my MA in Visual Communication: Contemporary Dialogues at University Wales Trinity Saint David. I recently purchased an Adana Letterpress and looking at getting some of my illustrations made into plates to see how they will turn out. Also, I'm working on creating stock and hoping to open my own little shop on my website!
Who are your biggest influences in the industry?
I think life itself is my biggest influence on my work, I love reportage illustration and drawing from everything that is going on around me. I was very lucky and bumped into Michael Rosen in Wolverhampton train station who noticed me sketching people in the platform, he had a look through my sketchbook and told me to always keep drawing from life, it's the biggest resource that we have available for free and it's all around us.
What was the last thing that inspired you?
Wales, the country and people are amazing and full of passion and fire for their country. The beaches and castles are beautiful, my favourite has to be Laugharne Castle as well as the language.
Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, has been a big influence in my illustrations recently.
What do you like about Portfoliobox?
Just how easy it has been to set up my website, upgrade my account, attach a domain name. I had a look at creating a shop on the website and that is currently a work in progress, but it's been completely hassle free.
