Nicolas König

Portfolio of the week

October 09, 2015

Who are you?

I'm Nicolas, a photographer and architecture student from Germany. I like to think of myself as a person who is fascinated by life's aesthetic. I am curious about light, fashion and big cities and try to capture my way of seeing things through photographs.

What are you inspired by?

My biggest inspiration I draw not only from artists and photographers. Much more, I'm inspired by art, architecture and travel. Currently I'm a big sucker for the bustling but modern and minimalist vibe of architecture, people and design found in Japan, which I'd love to visit.

What was the last movie you watched?

Well, to be honest the last movie I've watched was pretty much crap. But I'm a big fan of Tarantino and feel excited to see his new movie coming out later this year.

What was the last book you read?

I just recently finished 'the Cartel' by Don Winslow. Fantastic book.

Do you have any role model?

I don't really follow any role model. Of course there are people I admire, but more likely in a personal environment.

What is your next creative project?

Currently I'm working on a project dedicated to my fascination for the current coffee culture. It's a lifestyle project combining coffee, design and traveling. Personally I'd love to shoot some more architecture in the near future.

What do you like about Portfoliobox?

What I like most about Portfoliobox is definitely the user-friendliness. Furthermore I'm a big fan of the minimalist aesthetics. It's really simple, that’s why I love it!

Ieva Purina

Portfolio of the week

© Photographer Jérold Partouche

Who are you?

My name is Ieva Purina, I'm a retoucher from Riga, Latvia. I work at a photo studio where I spend most of my days editing photos or doing some graphic design/layout work. I also work as a food (and any other object) stylist for photo shoots.

What are you inspired by?

I'm inspired by nature, fashion and photography.

What was the lastmovie you watched?

Last movie...hmm. Mad Max probably. I don't really watch that many movies, lately I'm more into watching series.

What was the last book you read?

Recently I have spent a lot of time reading and doing research on Barcelona, Spain, as I am going on vacation soon. I like knowing a little about the places I plan to visit and adventures I plan to take part in.

Do you have any role model?

My role model in the professional scene would be my former boss. He's a photographer and I have worked beside him for almost 10 years. I admire the amount of attention and energy he gives to every shot. He goes out of his way to set the perfect conditions and then is ready to rearrange and look for more, different/better ways to light the subject. He doesn't just settle for OK. Even when the day has been long. I deliver my best possible work every time, I don't settle for just OK, either.

What is your next creative project?

A freelancer never knows when his next adventure will strike.

What do you like about Portfoliobox?

It has great layout possibilities and is very easy to use. The support is good.

Aaron Pedersen

Portfolio of the week

October 06, 2015

Who are you?

My name is Aaron Pedersen, I am an editorial & commercial photographer in Edmonton (western Canada). I like to take a more personal approach with my subjects, by that I mean I’d rather not get to complicated in setup and focus on what the person in front of the lens is doing an how to get the best out of them.

What are you inspired by?

I’m a big of a nerd when it comes to photo history and theory, so I love reading and hearing the stories behind photographs. I just read an article about Carl Fischer’s late 60’s Esquire covers and got me buzzing.

What was the last movie you watched?

The last film I watched was Made Of Stone, the Shane Meadows documentary about The Stone Roses

What was the last book you read?

I’ll be honest, I read mostly magazines but I have a long standing bookmark in Todd Babiak’s "Come, Barbarians"

Do you have any role model?

I have no particular role models but I’ve always been pretty influenced by the work of Rankin and David Bailey

What is your next creative project?

There’s a couple music videos in the works and about to start a promo for a modeling agency I work closely with.

What do you like about Portfoliobox?

What I love about Portfoliobox is that I can manage my site and put the work up that I want people to see with ease. The changes are instant so I can preview as I’m working on it. Plus the overall design is great, I get compliments on it all the time.

SEO TIPS #1 — On-Site Optimization

Tips & Tricks

August 03, 2015

Search engines evaluate your website from a technical point of view. In order to make your website appealing to search engines, there are few things you need to think about. Below are some tips about titles, meta-descriptions & meta-tags.

1. Site title & Page title

Site title and Page titles are displayed in the browser tab and search results. Titles are one of the most important aspects of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). A title is a word or a short phrase that describes the website or the page. They appear in a search result as follows: Page title - Site title. Here are a few things you need to think about, when choosing page titles:

Unnamed page: If you do not choose a title for your page, the title "untitled" will be allocated by default. Note that the title of your page will also be by default the url of the page. Choose a title in order to avoid untitled pages!

Duplicate titles: You should never have two pages with the same title. Search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.) consider this as bad practice since it is confusing for the visitor.

Length: In search result, the page titles will be cut after 65-75 characters depending on the search engine. Make sure that the title is shorter than 65-75 characters or make sure the most important words are in the beginning of the title.

You can change your site title under Settings → General  → Website → Title.

You can change a page title under Edit this page → Edit content.

2. Site description & page description

The site and page descriptions, also called Meta description, will appear in the search results under the page url. "Meta descriptions can be any length, but search engines generally will cut snippets longer than 160 characters, so it's wise to stay in these limits." explains Rand Fishkin in this Beginners Guide to SEO. The description has no effect on the page ranking but can draw attention to your site in the search results. Make sure to write a clear, readable & compelling description to encourage the visitor to click on your site.

You can edit the site description under Settings → General → Website → Site meta description.
You can edit the page description in the Edit this page → Settings → Meta description.

3. Site Keywords

The site Keywords will not have any effect on SEO. You can read more about it here. However, you can add keywords if you want Portfoliobox to categorize your site.

Edit the Keywords under Settings → General → Website → Site keywords.

4. Alt text

An Alt text, or Alternative text, is a text associated with an image that describes what the image depicts. Search engines cannot read images and therefore look for the Alt text of each images.

In Portfoliobox, the Alt text of your image is the image title. The image title can be edited in each gallery. You can choose to display or hide the image title on your site under Display Settings — depending on the template you use, the image title will display under the image or on hover. In both case, the image title will be the Alt text.

NB! Keeping the image title field empty migth cause your images to not be indexed in search engines.
