Portfolio of the day
Who are you?
My name is Kate McKay and I an Australian artist who explores through painting my relationship with nature. My latest exhibition features urban gardens and seeks a new way of thinking about these little pockets of paradise that sit within our busy streets.
What are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by the city I live in, wilderness landscapes, vibrant colours, patterns, artists, movies and fashion. The feel of the paint as you push it around with a brush is a very inspiring act for me too.
What was the last movie you watched?
The last movie I watched was The Revenant at the drive in cinemas. The beautiful and harsh landscapes that were captured in the film were absolutely divine!
What was the last book you read?
The last book I read was Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. I love the way Kafka is able to transform mundane reality into something completely twisted and mysterious. I’m currently reading Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies by Alastair Bonnett which I highly recommend.
Do you have any role model?
An artistic role model would have to be David Hockney – I think he is a painting legend. My friends and family (particularly my big sister) are my role models too.
What is your next creative project?
I’ve just completed a new series of works for my latest exhibition so I haven’t got any solid plans for my next project yet. I’m going to Europe for the first time this year so I’m sure my future work will be informed by this experience in many ways.
What do you like about Portfoliobox?
I had no experience with building a website before I used Portfoliobox and found it so easy to use. If I can use the website anyone can! I think the sleek contemporary layouts are a wonderful way to showcase my work – the designs enhance (rather than detract) my artwork.Visit site
